The Global Nitrogen Problem

Scientific American reports on the environment damage caused by the high use of nitrogen fertilizer.  The article examines the growing number of environmental "hot spots" in Asia and Latin America that are a result of the dependence on nitrogen fertilizer that was adopted following the Green Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s.

The article concludes that "synthetic fertilizers means indispensible for meeting global food demands , but the world can - and should - do more with less.

The article also provides a short history of the discovery and adoption of fertilizer as an agricultural practice.
