Haiti Food Aid Distributed As Cash, Vouchers, and Food

The United Nations' World Food Program (WFP) has announced that will distributing cash, vouchers and food in response to the earthquake in Haiti. 

The food, cash, and vouchers are part of a joint relief effort entitled “Supporting a Haitian-Led Food Security Programme,” organized by the WFP, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

In addition to other options, the WFP will: 1) targeted food assistance at vulnerable groups, and vouchers will be introduced as market systems become established; 2) in rural areas, target cash and food for work activities which are needed to rehabilitate rural roads, irrigation systems, storage facilities, and initiatives aimed at preventing soil erosion; and 3) in urban areas target food and cash for work initiatives that will focus on the immediate restoration and protection of livelihoods, including the removal of debris from schools, and the reconstruction of dwellings, streets and drainage systems.
