EU to realign development aid towards water

EurActiv.com has announced that the European Commission is realigning its development programs to focus on the increased need for access to water.  It will link this objective to goals already set by the U.N. Millenium Development Goal (MDG) of halving the proportion of the world's population without access to safe drinking water and improving access to adequate sanitation by 2015.

The program responsible for overseeing this objective is the EU Water Initiative (EUWI).  This was created in 2002 by the European Commission's Communication on Water Management in Developing Countries.  The EUWI is specifically focused on projects in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (referred to as the ACP region).
