Bio 2010 Leadership Summit - The Role of Biotechnology Innovation in Addressing Climate Change

The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) kicked off its annual convention at McCormick Place on 3 May 2010.

The Leadership Council focused on "The Role of Biotechnology Innovation in Addressing Climate Change."  Sponsored by BayerCrop Science, the session featured keynote speaker Roger N. Beachy, Ph.D., Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's new National Institute of Food and Agriculture who spoke on the topic of "Climate Change and Biotechnology – The Big Picture."  Next on the schedule was Jose W. Fernandez, Assistant Secretary for Economic, Energy, and Business Affairs who talked about "Promoting Innovation in Biotechnology" and addressed the Obama Administration's commitment to supporting U.S. agricultural exports, including gene-engineered crops.

These speeches were followed by an discussion amongst a panel of industry experts including Paul Schickler, President, Pioneer Hi-Bred International; Dr. Richard Hamilton, President & CEO, Ceres; Adam Monroe, President, Novozymes, North America; Dr. Michael Wang, Argonne National Laboratory; and Dr. Steffen Mueller, University of Illinois - Chicago, Energy Resources Center.  The topic of discussion focused on climate change, regulations, industry developments, as well as facts, figures, future growth, and the current business climate for biofuels.
