DuPont's Jim Borel - 21st Century Solutions Need 21st Century Policy

Dupont Pioneer issued a press release from the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) annual convention in Chicago on 5 May 2010 covering a speech made by Dupont Executive Vice President James C. Borel on the need for agricultural innovations to meet growing food needs as the global population grows to 9 billion by 2050.

According to Borel, "[i]mproved global coordination of import and cultivation of biotech crops, for example, could have a dramatic positive impact of world food security. ... Regulatory procedures and requirements differ from country to country, resulting in trade disruptions and delayed introductions of new technologies that have the potential to greatly increase grower productivity and food supply."

Borel noted that only 30 gene-engineered crops are grown worldwide today.  In the next five years, he predicted that this will increase to more than 120 individual events will be cultivated "with thousands of event combinations, or trait stacks."

Borel challenged "private and public sectors, governments and regulatory agencies to find new ways to collaborate and recognized innovative collaborations that have taken place."

He noted that Dupont/Pioneer is "reaching out and collaborating with partners around the world – all toward delivering sustainable solutions that meet the world’s most pressing needs today and well into the 21st century. ... A harmonized, predictable science-based regulatory system is a goal fitting all our collective attention as we work together to address the pressing need to feed the growing population."
