US EPA Approves Pioneer's Optimum® AcreMax™ "Refuge-in-the-Bag" Seeds

Dupont/Pioneer Hi-Bred issued a press release on 3 May 2010 announcing that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had approved the commercial release of Optimum® AcreMax™ 1 seeds.  This is also known as an "in-the-bag solution" that provides insect protection and reduces the amount of acreage that needs to be dedicated to insect refuge management for corn rootworms.

The U.S. EPA currently requires that corn growers set aside a certain amount of acreage with corn that is not insect resistance, allowing insects to flee to this area as a "refuge." Optimum® AcreMax™ 1 insect protection reduces the traditional 20 percent corn rootworm refuge by half, "increasing the ease and flexibility of planting a separate corn borer refuge."

Optimum® AcreMax™ 1 products contain stacked traits including above- and below-ground biotech insect protection and are also herbicide tolerant.

Still pending approval and field testing are Optimum® AcreMax™ 2 seeds.  These are also provide insect protection.  Commercialization is anticipated for 2012.
