Uruguay Opens New GM Rice Lab

In June 2010, Uruguay's National Agriculture Research Institute (INIA) announced the opening of a new regional biotechnology laboratory in Treinta y Tres focused on the cultivation of gene modified (GM) biotech rice.  

The new laboratory is located in the "heart of the country's main rice growing area."  It is equipped with research and development facilities that complement the molecular biology work underway at the main INIA biotechnology unit in Montevideo. 

This new laboratory will help researchers implement their research and test in the nearby fields.  Researchers are currently focused on marker-selection issues including: 1) "incorporation of durable resistance to Pyricularia grisea by introgression of resistance genes into the elite varieties El Paso 144 and INIA Olimar, using molecular markers to identify resistant individuals in each selection cycle" and 2) "molecular characterization of red rice hybrids resistant to imidazolinones obtained from rice fields where the Clearfield® production system was used."

The main goal of the new laboratory is to "contribute towards bringing basic science efforts to tangible achievements for domestic [Uruguayan] production."
