Ghana Fortified Food Campaign Launched

Ghana Fortified Food Campaign Promoted as "Nourish Your Life" by Deputy Minister of Women and Children's Affairs

On 27 May 2011 the Ghana Fortified Food campaign was launched by the government of Ghana.  The Ghana Fortified Food campaign will be administered by the Food & Drugs Board (FDB) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The Ghana Fortified Food campaign is specifically targeted at improving the health of children and women of child-bearing age.  Hajia Hawawu Boya Gariba, Ghana's Deputy Minister of Women and Children's Affairs is a strong promoter of the new campaign.  She helped to inaugurate the launch of Ghana Fortified Food at the Kumasi Race Course under the banner of "Nourish Your Life."  At this event, the Deputy Minister urged women to buy fortified foods as a way to promote their families' health.  She noted that "statistics indicate that increasing deficiencies particularly in vitamin A and iron cause chronic and infectious diseases in children, hence the fortification campaign to promote consumption of products that contain them to complement efforts to control these chronic diseases."  She also committed to providing fortified foods as  part of every school feeding program.

The Ghana Fortified Food campaign administered by the FDB's National Micro-Nutrient Programme is sponsored by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).   Under this sponsorship, the Ghana Fortified Food Campaign will receive at least 40,000 metric tonnes of fortified vegetable oil and 481,000 metric tonnes of fortified wheat flour over five years.   GAIN's food fortification program was launched in 2007 under the partnership of 35 organizations from public and private sectors.
