USDA Funds US$8.5M For Fortified Food Pilot Program in 6 Countries

On 6 December 2011 the USDA issued a press release announcing that is would be providing US$8.5M to fund organizations who will be providing fortified food aid products to six countries.  Over the next three years, this will be administered under the Micronutrient-Fortified Food Aid Products Pilot Program, which is funded by the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition (McGovern-Dole) Program. Fortified foods will go to:

  • Cambodia
  • Guatemala
  • Guinea-Bissau
  • Haiti
  • Mozambique
  • Tanzania
Organizations receiving funding will develop and field test fortified food aid products for children, women and infants in the countries noted above. The products will be specifically fortified with vitamins or minerals to address the micro-nutrient deficiencies of a specific population or group. The products will be developed in the United States using domestically grown commodities.

This first test for this fortified food pilot program was in Guinea-Bissau in 2010.  The International Partnership for Human Development, Inc. developed and distributed its ready-to-use, supplementary dairy paste.  USDA looks to identify new, more effective products to be distributed through the McGovern-Dole Program.

The McGovern-Dole program was authorized to help fund organizations that either use or sell donated U.S. commodities in recipient countries to help support education, child development, and food security in low-income, food deficit countries that are committed to universal education.  It is currently funding, 37 food aid agreements with 16 cooperating sponsors in 30 countries, assisting more than five million beneficiaries.
