On 27 February 2012, RTT News and a World Food Programme (WFP) press release reported that the  European Foreign Affairs Council had extended EU naval operations under Operation ATALANTA until December 2014 to protect humanitarian aid shipments to Somalia from piracy.

Launched in December 2008, EU NAVFOR- ATALANTA has been escorting WFP and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) shipments to Somalia.  This naval protection is conducted within the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa.  It includes several warships and reconnaissance aircraft between the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. The need for this military aid was confirmed in July 2011 by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB).
