Non-profit in Chile Seeks to Conserve Biodiversity with Launch of New Chilean Heirloom Seed Catalog.Non-profit Fundación Sociedades Sustentables has created a new online heirloom seed catalog. It's goal is to help preserve Chilean heirloom seeds and promote the conservation of biodiversity in Latin America. The catalogers worked with local farmers to document 702 species of Chilean heirloom seeds. They added to the collection seeds that were native to Chile and those used in traditional Chilean agricultural practices. They found that the largest categories of Chilean heirloom seeds were beans (259), corn (87), tomatoes (61) and potatoes (23).
This project received support from Global Green Grants Fund, Centro de Educación y Technología and the Banco Base de Semillas (seed bank division) of Chile’s governmental Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA).
